An Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA) Framework for Developing Countries (bibtex)
by Shaukat Khan, Iman Hajirasouliha, Maurizio Guadagnini, Kypros Pilakoutas
Abstract:
The events of Kashmir, Pakistan in 2005 and Haiti in 2010 show the absence of effective Earthquake Risk Mitigation (ERM) plans. This is the case in the majority of the developing countries. Work on Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA) in the past was mainly focused in developed countries (HAZUS, RADIUS and RISK-UE). Therefore, more work on ERA needs to be undertaken specifically addressing problems in developing countries. This research focuses on developing a comprehensive ERA framework for the developing countries where various aspects of ERA are addressed. The ERA framework includes hazard due to earthquakes and their secondary effects (tsunami, landslides, liquefaction etc.), Vulnerability assessment of deficient structures (typically encountered in developing countries) and development of building inventories which is a costly and time consuming. This paper presents the initial work done in the development of the ERA framework.
